When I get firestain/firescale on my work I have found Luxor®polishing compounds are very effective. The pink Luxor® (6.5 micron) is incredible at removing scratches and firestain. The firestain in the first image was removed in under a minute on the bench lathe. The final picture has two 14k gold dots that I had inlaid and is free of firestain. You can also use a flex shaft and a cotton buff mandrel!
Definition: Firestain is a layer of oxides that is visible on the surface of objects made of metal alloys containing copper when the object is heated, as by a jeweler heating a ring to apply solder during a repair. On copper-containing alloys of gold or of silver (such as sterling silver), it presents as a red or purple stain. Some people learn from their teachers to call that firescale.
