Here is a helpful process video of melting your gold dust (collected under your bench pin in tissue paper!) into a nugget to be reworked as sheet or wire from @metalsmithsinflorence - “You’ve got all this gold dust, what do you do? Refine it yourself! 💪🏼🔥
Here are the steps:
1️⃣ Gather your clean gold dust, no included solder (this applies for sterling and fine silver too). Don’t worry about hair, little bits of paper or dust in the pile…it will burn away.🔥
2️⃣ Run a magnet through the dust pile to get out all the little bits of ferrous metal like those from your saw blades or metal files.🧲
3️⃣ Add an equal amount of borax to the pile and mix well
4️⃣ Place this in your crucible and melt it and cast your ingot.🔥
5️⃣ Pickle, clean, and dry.
This little gold dust pile yielded 1.6 grams of 18k gold. That’s a little chunk of money! Have you ever refined your own metal?!?
